Summary

The openarea is a folder on the network where you can share files within your department, with other faculty/staff members and with students.

Below are instructions for connecting to the openarea from both on and off campus.

From On Campus

Windows:

Employees can access the openarea (O:\ Drive) on a Rowan managed computer by double-clicking the "My Computer" icon on your desktop (or from the Start Menu, depending on how Windows XP looks on your computer) and double-clicking the O: Drive.

Students who want to access the openarea should take the following steps:

  • From the Windows Start Menu, click "Run"
  • Enter the following: \\rowanads.rowan.edu\common\openarea
  • Click "OK" and login using rowanads\username as your username and your Rowan network password

Mac OS X:

  • Click "Go" on the Finder menu and then "Connect to Server"
  • Enter the location of the openarea in the following format: smb://rowanads.rowan.edu/common/openarea
  • Login using rowanads\username as your username and your Rowan network password

PLEASE NOTE:
Computers running OS X 10.6.8 and below will not be able to connect to the openarea on the new file system. If you have a Rowan owned computer with OS X 10.6.8 or below, please bring your computer to the Technology Assistance Center in Memorial Hall to have it updated.

Computers running 10.9 Maverick may require a fix in order to access the Openarea. Please contact the Support Center at support@rowan.edu.

If you need to be given access to a folder in the openarea or would like a new folder created, you should contact the Support Center at 856.256.4400 or support@rowan.edu.

From Off Campus

To access the openarea while off campus, first connect to the VPN by visiting: http://vpn2.rowan.edu. The Rowan VPN is limited to approved users. To request access, please follow the instructions found at https://go.rowan.edu/vpn. You can also access the openarea without the VPN by using ExpanDrive.

Windows:

  • Login the VPN
  • From the Windows Start Menu, Click "Run"
  • Enter the following: \\rowanads.rowan.edu\common\openarea
  • Click "OK" and login using rowanads\username as your username and your Rowan network password

Mac OS X:

  • Login to the VPN
  • Click "Go" on the Finder menu and then "Connect to Server"
  • Enter the following: smb://rowanads.rowan.edu/common/openarea and login using rowanads\username as your username and your Rowan network password.

If you know the full path to the subfolder you wish to access, entering that information will allow you to connect much more quickly. For example: smb://rowanads.rowan.edu/common/openarea/COB

  • Upon entering your username and password, you may notice a Finder window appear but the openarea is empty. Please give it a few seconds to populate the directory.
  • The openarea will then appear with the folders in the directory. Going into a folder immediately may show the folder as being empty. Please wait up to a minute for the Finder window to enumerate the folders. They will turn into Volume drives once it is complete. Going into subfolders from then on should behave normally.

If you need to be given access to a folder in the openarea or would like a new folder created, you should contact the Support Center at 856.256.4400 or support@rowan.edu.

Troubleshooting

If you cannot see your folders on the openarea click Go and then Connect to Server in the Finder menu.

In the Favorite Servers box, remove any references to filer1 for the openarea and then try following the steps above again.

PLEASE NOTE: Computers running OS X 10.6.8 and below will not be able to connect to the openarea on the new file system. You will need to update to 10.7 or higher or use the RowanCloud.

Computers running 10.9 Maverick may require a fix in order to access the Openarea. Please contact the Support Center at support@rowan.edu if you have trouble connecting.
