The University's Virtual Private Network, or VPN, client allows you to access the University's network resources from home, as if you were on campus.
The VPN is licensed software, which is only available to the University's employees and students.
The Cisco AnyConnect VPN client is a web-based VPN client that does not require user configuration. VPN is a secure method of accessing the University's computer resources.
The Cisco VPN is required to access Exchange e-mail using some versions of Outlook, but not Outlook 2013, and files on the University's network from off campus.
How to Connect to VPN
What You'll Need Before Connecting:
- Your Rowan username and password
- An active Internet connection
- We recommend uninstalling the old VPN client if it is on your machine and rebooting after the uninstall is complete
- The Java Runtime Environment must be installed before you will be able to successfully install the AnyConnect client
Mac users should use the Software Update feature, which is available on the Apple menu, to check whether the most up-to-date version of Java has been installed.
Request VPN Access
If you need VPN access, please submit a request with the Information Security Office on the Rowan University ID page.
On the ID page, select “VPN Access” from the left hand menu to submit your request.
Your request will be evaluated and you will receive a response within two business days. Once your request has been approved, you will be able to download and install the VPN.
Services Requiring VPN Access
Some examples of services that do require the VPN when off campus:
- Direct access to your Home Directory and Openarea via the VPN
- Accessing your Rowan University email using Outlook 2007/2010
- Internet Native Banner
- Access to the University's HPC environment and specialized computational resources (CC, RUCC and CADD environments)
- Access to Remote Desktop and other administrative interfaces for individuals responsible for supporting some aspect of an application or IT service
Some examples of common services that do not require VPN access when off campus:
- Accessing your Rowan University email via Outlook 2013 or the website at https://exchange.rowan.edu
- Banner Self Service
- Citrix and RowanCloud
- Home Directory and Openarea access via ExpanDrive
- EMR access for SOM Healthcare professionals, which is provided through Citrix
- All instances of Blackboard (Glassboro, SOM, CMSRU)
- Rowan's Google Apps for Education Services
- Rowan Online's Canvas
Connecting to the Rowan VPN
- Point your browser to http://vpn2.rowan.edu
- Enter your Rowan network username and password and click Login
- Click the Start AnyConnect link in your browser window to begin installation of the AnyConnect program. If you receive a certificate warning, accept the certificate and continue with the installation.
NOTE: On Macintosh PowerPC computers, you may be asked to manually install the AnyConnect client (see example below). Click the link under Install using the link below to complete your installation.
Once the installation is complete, you will be automatically connected to Rowan's VPN. You should now see the icon circled in the image below in your system tray, if you are on a Windows PC, or the system dock, if you are on a Macintosh.
Disconnecting from the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client
On a Windows PC
To disconnect from the AnyConnect VPN connection on a Windows PC:
- Right click the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client icon in your system tray
- Select Open AnyConnect
- From the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client screen, choose Disconnect
On a Macintosh
To disconnect from the AnyConnect VPN connection on a Macintosh:
- Click the Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client in your system dock
- From the Cisco AnyConnect Client screen, click the Disconnect button
