Spike in scams targeting Rowan employees

Information Resources & Technology has seen a recent spike in scams targeting Rowan University employees.

“Are You Available?” Scams

This scam appears to come from a department head or supervisor who will ask “Are you available?” or request a cell phone number they can reach you at. If you respond, the person will claim they are caught in a meeting or otherwise unavailable and ask you to provide personal information or purchase gift cards on their behalf.

While these scams appear to come from a known colleague, they are usually sent from external email addresses. Look for the [EXTERNAL] label in subject lines, and take extra precaution when deciding whether to click on a link or take another action in response to a message with that label.

Password Scams

This scam is designed to steal your username and password. Scammers use many different techniques to trick you into turning over this information, but a recent scam claimed faculty and staff had to confirm their email and password as part of a password policy update.

Information Resources & Technology will never ask you to provide your password via email, and the only website you should ever use to make changes to your password is Rowan NetID
