Rowan Network will start blocking Windows 7 in January

As previously announced, Information Resources & Technology will begin blocking computers running Windows 7 from connecting to the Rowan Network this winter, since Microsoft will no longer be providing security updates and other patches for that operating system.

As of Jan. 14, 2020 — the day Microsoft ends support for Windows 7 — computers that are still running Windows 7 will begin to lose access to Rowan Network resources, including wired and wireless internet.

What do I do if I have a computer with Windows 7?

Rowan-Owned Computers

We have been directly contacting employees with Rowan-owned Windows 7 computers regarding their options, which also may include upgrading to Windows 10 or replacing your computer. If you have not yet been contacted about the status of your computer, please submit a request at support.rowan.edu, and we will work with you to determine the appropriate solution.

We are aware that there are still some important University systems and applications that depend on Windows 7 and cannot run on a newer operating system due to technical reasons. To request an exception, please contact the Technology Support Center at 856-256-4400, and we will guide you through the process of filling out the exception request.

Personal Computers

If you are a student or employee with a personal Windows 7 computer, you will need to upgrade your operating system to maintain your access to Rowan Network resources.

  1. Back up your files. Students and employees have access to unlimited storage on Google Drive. For help uploading files to Google Drive, review these instructions.
  2. Download Windows 10 for free. Windows 10 is available on Microsoft’s website for free. Follow the prompts to download Windows 10 and upgrade your computer.

We are not able to assist with upgrading personal computers to Windows 10. If you are unable to upgrade your computer to Windows 10, please contact the Technology Support Center at 856-256-4400 to discuss your options.
