External label to be applied to non-Rowan emails on May 18

As of Monday, May 18, Information Resources & Technology will label emails sent from non-Rowan University email addresses as [EXTERNAL] in the subject line in order to flag potential phishing scams, most of which originate with external senders.

Internal Message Subject Example
“Update on IRT technology event”

External Message Subject Example
“[EXTERNAL] Update on IRT technology event”

Many legitimate emails come from external senders. The [EXTERNAL] label does not mean the message is a scam. The label is meant as a warning to take extra precaution when evaluating whether to click on a link or take another action in response to the message. The label can also help you identify whether a message may be from a malicious user pretending to be a member of the Rowan community. For more tips for spotting scams, visit go.rowan.edu/phishing

The label will be applied to all external email messages, including messages sent from personal Gmail accounts, other universities and outside vendors and organizations. Students sending emails from their Rowan Gmail @students.rowan.edu address to another Rowan University email address will not be labeled as external.
