New Webex App coming to Rowan in November

Your Webex experience will be getting an upgrade soon.

Cisco is pushing out a new Webex App that lets you chat in one-on-one or group conversations, make calls and join virtual meetings from one place while seamlessly switching between devices. 

Anyone who uses Webex Meetings with a Rowan account will be automatically prompted to upgrade to the new Webex App on Tuesday, Nov. 15. We will also be retiring Cisco Jabber on the same day, since the Webex App offers the same functionality as Jabber, plus more!

The new Webex App includes the following features:

  • Persistent chat and collaboration rooms
  • Screen sharing and white boarding
  • On-demand video or audio meetings
  • Meeting scheduling and file sharing

Webex upgrade on November 15

If you currently have the Webex Meetings desktop app installed on a personal or Rowan-managed computer, you will be prompted to update it to the Webex App on Tuesday, Nov. 15.  As part of this process, Webex Meetings will be removed from your computer. 

When you see the Update now button in your Meetings desktop app, you're ready to update to the Webex app. For more information, see our FAQ article on updating to the Webex App.

If you do not have Webex Meetings installed, you will need to download and install the new Webex App from the Webex website to start using it. If you are using a Rowan-managed computer, you do not need administrative rights on your computer to complete this installation.

Cisco Jabber retirement on November 15

We will also be retiring Cisco Jabber since the new Webex App offers an improved instant messaging experience, including the ability to share files and GIFs. With the retirement of Cisco Jabber, the Webex App will become the officially supported instant messaging service for Rowan University. 

Existing persistent chat rooms in Jabber will be recreated in Webex by Tuesday, Nov. 15. The new rooms will not contain the chat history from Jabber, but the members of the Jabber rooms will be transferred to Webex. 

As of Tuesday, Nov. 15, you can find the new chat rooms in Webex under Messaging > Spaces. If you do not have the Webex App installed, you will need to download and install the new Webex App from the Webex website to start using it. If you are using a Rowan-managed computer, you do not need administrative rights on your computer to complete this installation.

If you are currently using your Rowan phone number to make calls in Jabber, you will just need to enable calling in the Webex App to switch your phone number to Webex.
