Updates to cell phone reimbursement and purchasing programs

Rowan University recently updated its Cellular Device Policy to provide employees with more flexibility in choosing devices and service plans that meet their personal and work obligations.

The updated policy includes the following changes, which will go into effect on July 1, 2023:

  • Resumption of personal cell phone reimbursement program for full-time employees, including establishing new eligibility requirements and reimbursement rates
  • Termination of University-owned cell phone purchasing program for individuals

Resumption of Personal Cell Phone Reimbursement

Full-time employees who meet the eligibility requirements in the recently updated Cellular Device Policy may receive reimbursement for the use of personal cell phones for official Rowan University business as of July 1, 2023. Reimbursement levels vary depending on expected availability and usage. For current reimbursement amounts, see Appendix A of the Cellular Device Policy.

Your supervisor must apply for this program on your behalf using the Cell Phone Reimbursement Form and renew your participation in the program annually. For step-by-step instructions on the application process, review our cell phone reimbursement procedure article.

Termination of University-Owned Cellular Devices

With the resumption of the personal cell phone reimbursement program, we will no longer be purchasing or supporting Rowan-owned cell phones or cellular devices for employees. Cellular devices that are regularly passed between multiple individuals within a department will not be impacted.

Employees who have been assigned a Rowan-owned cell phone may opt to port their existing phone to a personal plan. We will also be canceling cellular plans for iPads with cellular service and mobile WiFi hotspots. We will be directly contacting employees with Rowan-owned cellular devices with more details on this process.
