Limiting RowanSecure access to Rowan-managed devices

Information Resources & Technology will be limiting access to the RowanSecure wireless and wired networks to Rowan-managed devices in the coming days to better protect Rowan University’s internal network resources against potential cyber threats.

How will these changes affect you?

  • If you only use RowanWiFi from a personally-owned device: These changes will not affect you.
  • If you use a Rowan-managed device on the RowanSecure wireless or wired networks, as most University employees do: These changes will not affect you.
  • If you use a Rowan-owned but not a Rowan-managed device, such as specialized research equipment, on the RowanSecure wireless and wired networks: These changes may affect your access to certain network resources, depending on your use case. If you fall into this category and experience connectivity issues in the coming days, please call 856-256-4400 or email support@rowan.edu for assistance.
  • If you use a wireless connection to access RowanSecure on a personally-owned device or a device owned by another institution: Your device will no longer work on RowanSecure. The next time you are on campus, you will need to connect to RowanWiFi for internet access. If you have trouble connecting to RowanWiFi, set your device to forget the RowanSecure wireless network and then connect to the RowanWiFi network.
  • If you use a wired connection to access the network on a personally-owned device, as some students in University housing do: Your device will default to internet access only. These changes will simplify the process for getting your device online through a wired connection, as you will no longer need to install ClearPass OnGuard to successfully reach the internet.

Why are we making these changes?

Most students and many employees only require internet access to complete their day-to-day tasks at Rowan. From RowanWiFi, you can access the internet and any Rowan-specific services available directly from the internet, including Canvas, Google Drive and Self-Service Banner.

RowanSecure, on the other hand, provides internet access and access to internal network resources that should only be accessible via devices that meet our security and compliance standards. By restricting access to RowanSecure to only Rowan-managed devices, we are able to better protect the University’s critical systems and data from emergent cyber threats.

We may announce additional information as we finalize these changes and implement them on campus. Please check your email for further updates.

Thank you for your understanding as we work to better protect our network, our data and our university.
