Extending trade-in cycle to 5 years

Message on behalf of the Divisions of Information Resources & Technology and Academic Affairs

Rowan University has extended its trade-in cycle for Rowan-managed computers from four years to five years to leverage the improved durability of modern hardware while also addressing budgetary constraints and supporting sustainability efforts across the institution.

Here are the key points you need to be aware of:

  • Extension of Trade-In Cycle to 5 Years: Rowan-managed computers included in the university’s trade-in cycle program will now be replaced every five years, rather than every four years.
  • Laptops Due for Replacement in FY25: Computers scheduled for replacement during the current fiscal year (FY25) will be replaced during the next fiscal year (FY26).
  • New Laptops for Incoming Faculty: This change does not affect the purchasing and distribution of laptops for new faculty who are joining Rowan University in fall 2024. However, laptops distributed in fall 2024 will still follow the revised five-year replacement cycle.

Why are we making this change?

By extending the length of the trade-in cycle, Rowan University is able to take advantage of the increased durability of modern hardware while simultaneously saving money and supporting campus-wide sustainability efforts by reducing electronic waste.

While we understand this extension to the trade-in cycle timeline may cause some inconvenience, we appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we implement this change. Our goal is to ensure that all faculty and staff have the necessary resources to perform their duties effectively, and we believe we can do so following this extended timeline.
