Windows 11 upgrade: Coming soon to your Rowan computer

Windows 11 is arriving at Rowan University soon.

Information Resources & Technology plans to start upgrading Rowan-managed computers from Windows 10 to Windows 11 during this academic year. The new operating system offers features to help boost your productivity, optimize your screen space and secure your data.

Here’s what else you need to know now.

When will your computer be upgraded to Windows 11?

We will upgrade Rowan-managed computers to Windows 11 in two phases:

  • Opt-In Period Phase: Employees who want to upgrade early will be given the opportunity to opt-in to Windows 11. We expect this phase to begin in fall 2024/winter 2025.
  • Required Upgrade Phase: Once the opt-in period has concluded, we will begin rolling out Windows 11 to all eligible Rowan-managed computers. You may defer the upgrade for up to 90 days, at which point Windows 11 will automatically be installed on your computer. We expect this phase to begin in winter/spring 2025. Computers in classrooms and computer labs will be upgraded during summer 2025.

How should you prepare for the Windows 11 upgrade?

  • All employees assigned a Rowan-managed Windows computer: Get familiar with Windows 11, which has several user experience changes from Windows 10, including enhanced multitasking support, an updated start menu and new icons and themes.
  • Employees who manage and/or use specialized applications: While Microsoft expects most applications to work with Windows 11, they acknowledge some older ones might run poorly or not at all. Reach out to your vendor to determine if your application is compatible with Windows 11, and, if not, ask if you can upgrade to a compatible version. If there are still issues, contact us now to determine the best course of action for your specific application.
  • Employees assigned computers that cannot be upgraded: We have contacted employees who are assigned computers that cannot be upgraded to Windows 11 due to compatibility issues. These computers must be removed from service, and it will be the responsibility of the employee’s department to buy a replacement. If you are unsure whether your computer is compatible with Windows 11, please contact us for further assistance.
