Information Resources & Technology will start upgrading Rowan-managed computers assigned to members of the Rowan community to Windows 11 on Monday, February 3. This upgrade will be rolled out in phases throughout the spring semester.
Computers in classrooms and computer labs, as well as our virtual desktops in Citrix, will be upgraded to Windows 11 during summer 2025.
Windows 11 offers features to help boost your productivity, optimize your screen space and secure your data. The upgrade is required as Microsoft will end support for Windows 10 this year.
Preparing for Windows 11 Upgrade: Important Steps & Timeline
- Back up your data & test a restore: Make sure your data is backed up before you start the upgrade, as you may lose files if the upgrade is not successful. Confirm our desktop backup solution, CrashPlan, has been installed on your computer and is actively saving your files, and test a restore to ensure you can recover your data. You can also manually back up specific files to Google Drive or OneDrive.
- Get familiar with Windows 11: Windows 11 has several user experience changes from Windows 10, including enhanced multitasking support, an updated start menu and new icons and themes. Review our article on getting started with Windows 11 for tips on navigating the new operating system.
- Start Windows 11 upgrade: You will receive a Windows Update message when Windows 11 is ready to be installed on your computer. While upgrade times will vary, it may take up to one hour to install Windows 11 and complete the upgrade. You may defer the upgrade for up to 30 days, at which point Windows 11 will automatically be installed on your computer.
