How to protect your Rowan computer and data

Here’s how you can defend your computer from cyber threats: 

• Install operating system & software updates: You’ll receive notifications in your taskbar when you have pending updates on a Windows computer. Review our article on checking for updates to see exactly what to look for on your Windows computer or to get instructions for Mac computers. 
• Lock your computer when you’re not using it: Whether you’re stepping away for a meeting or leaving the office for the day, lock your computer. You can easily do so using the following shortcuts:
  • Windows: Windows key + L
  • Mac: Control + Command + Q
• Connect to the VPN when off-campus: Make sure you have the latest security updates and software patches by connecting to the Rowan VPN for at least two hours a day if your computer is mostly used off-campus.

Here’s how you can safeguard the information you need to do your job at Rowan:

• Use CrashPlan to backup your important files: CrashPlan securely and continuously backs up your data to the cloud, preventing data loss and allowing you to easily restore files. CrashPlan is now on most Rowan-managed computers. Here’s what you need to know about CrashPlan.
• Use approved cloud storage options: Rowan University's approved cloud storage options, Google Drive and OneDrive, can serve the data storage needs of most employees, including those who have access to confidential data, including HIPAA and FERPA.
