“RAMageddon” delaying computer & IT hardware shipments

IT hardware manufacturers are facing rising costs for computer memory chips amid a global supply shortage some have dubbed “RAMageddon.”

Nearly every piece of technology, including phones and laptops, needs memory chips, or RAM, to function, and the artificial intelligence and data center boom has cornered much of the market.

What This Means for You

Expect shipment delays from several weeks to months and cost increases for computers and other IT hardware.

As you consider your technology needs for the rest of this fiscal year, we encourage you to:

  • Place orders as early as possible to help with timely delivery and receiving.
  • Review potential budget impacts if you have large purchases planned for this fiscal year.

While we understand the frustration over these delays, all technology purchases must be submitted through our approved procurement process to ensure compliance with University policies. We will not reimburse employees who purchase technology using personal funds or otherwise try to circumvent the University’s procurement process.
