Gmail to Outlook Transition
Gmail to Outlook Transition
Information Resources & Technology will transition students currently using Google’s Gmail to Microsoft Outlook in August to streamline email access and delivery.
While this transition was already underway, we’re expediting the timeline to allow the university to reduce email infrastructure costs while providing a unified email experience for all students and employees.

Email Interruptions Possible During Transition
As we complete this transition, you may be unable to access your email from Friday, July 31, at 8 p.m. to Monday, August 3, at 6 a.m.
Your email address and how you access it will change during the first weekend of August.
As of Monday, August 3, the following will be in place:
- Email address change: Your Rowan email will end with @rowan.edu, rather than @students.rowan.edu. New emails sent to your @students.rowan.edu account after this transition will be automatically forwarded to your @rowan.edu account.
- Email access in Outlook: You will log in with your @rowan.edu email address to Outlook for the web. You can also download Outlook to your computer or install the app on your mobile device.
- View-only access in Gmail: You will not lose access to older emails. You may still view messages previously sent to your @students.rowan.edu Gmail account. This change will also not affect access to other Google Workspace apps, such as Google Drive.
FAQs
How do I access my email after this transition?
You can access your Rowan email through Outlook for the web, download Outlook on your computer or install the app on your mobile device.
Why are we making this change?
- Unified experience: This change will bring Rowan University students, faculty and staff into one email and calendaring platform, making it easier to communicate and collaborate with the entire campus community.
- Increased security: Exchange Online includes advanced security features that allow us to more quickly spot and address malicious emails and attachments.
- Workforce preparedness: The majority of Fortune 500 companies use Exchange Online and the Microsoft 365 suite. Students who use the platform now will be better prepared for their first job.
We’re expediting the timeline for current students now to allow the university to reduce email infrastructure costs.
Can I still access Google Workspace, including Google Drive, through Rowan?
Yes! This change will not impact access to other Google Workspace apps, like Google Drive, Google Docs and Google Calendar.
